As a sun-worshipping, flip-flop wearing California Girl, I don’t buy into summer ending or white getting packed away just because Labor Day happened. I do believe the passing of that three-day-weekend in September presents great opportunity for shopping and stocking up on warm, cozy styles in preparation for cooler nights (and days). For the first time in a couple of seasons, I feel like the style needle has really moved and we’re seeing new, fresh fashion. To guide you through these styles and silhouettes, I pulled together this fall trend guide for you Foxes. As always, you can click to buy any of the items in the collages on Keaton Row. And, of course, I’m always available for one-on-one styling to help you pick the perfect pieces for your wardrobe. Which fall trends do you love? Let me know in comments or on Facebook.
Capes and Ponchos
Burberry Prorsum’s personalized ponchos were some of the most photographed pieces from the fall runway collections. I mean, who wouldn’t want to wrap themselves up a cozy, monogrammed, designer blanket on a cold day and call it the height of fashion?! Stylish ponchos, blankets and capes are one of the easiest and warmest trends of the season. Any incarnation of the silhouette works, but the super chic will indulge in western details like fringe or intricate patterns. Drape one over a shoulder for an effortlessly chic boho vibe. Or, grab a thick belt and cinch at your waist to define a flattering silhouette.
Ponchos not your thing? There’s still plenty of opportunity to snuggle up in softness this season. Some outlets hailed knits as the story of the Fall 2014 runways and there is little doubt that it’s a season where style meets comfort at a whole new level. Whether cozy oversized sweaters at Michael Kors or cable-knit leggings at Marc Jacobs , knits are head-to-toe for Fall 2014. If you try the knits-on-knits look, look for sophisticated styles and be cautious not to let the volume overwhelm you. You can still be fashion forward with the trend picking select pieces. In fact I don’t usually cite must-have styles, but an easy knit sweater you can luxe up with skirts or wear casually may be it for Fall 2014.
All of my female clients know I love A-line skirts. They look amazing on everyone, hiding the curves you don’t want and creating curves you do, all the while highlighting your waist. So it’s a happy season in my book when A-lines are the in skirt silhouette. On early fall shops with clients, I’ve noticed many of the chicest styles are structured fabrics like leather in the Gucci look to the left and even neoprene in some cases. I love clean A-lines, but styles with some flounce add femininity to a look. The style transcends skirts into dresses and jackets, so look for this flattering style in a variety of pieces.
And while we’re talking about skirts, it’s the season to channel your inner Angelina and adopt a thigh-showing stance. It’s especially haute for evening, but I have also seen milder versions of the thigh-high-slit in daytime skirts and dresses like the Altuzarra look on the right (looks like we’ll see this trend when his new Target collab hits stores Sept. 14). The look is daring so make sure you are appropriately covered in all of the right places. If you try the style for day during the cold months, you may even want to take advantage of the knitwear trend and consider some textured tights.
The A-line skirt trend is definitely overlaps a larger trend: mod influences in fall fashion. We see this in A-line and swing silhouettes, but also details like chunky heels, color blocking and psychedelic prints.
Wide Leg Pants
You may have read about the death of the skinny jean. While these reports of their death are greatly exaggerated in my opinion, there’s no doubt that fashion is leaving the slim-leg, ankle pant silhouette behind in favor of wide trouser and palazzo styles. I think these look especially chic in higher-rises, which define a narrow waist, and with a tucked-in shirt. When you want to wear something untucked, short-over-long like the 3.1 Philip Lim runway look on the right is a smart style strategy. To make your legs look especially long, pair with pointed-toed shoes.
One of my least favorite things about my grad school days living in cold east coast weather was having to cover up fabulous outfits with a boring black coat. Not the case this season. Statement outerwear in a variety of lengths and silhouettes is a thing. Details to look out for are volume, color and (faux!) fur…just not necessarily all in the same look!
Booties have been big for a few years, so you should have basic staples (you should!). This season, it’s about amping up your bootie game. The cut-out and peep-toe trends we saw in Summer (yes, if you missed it, Summer booties were haute) continue. Other details to look for: intricate embellishments, fur, color blocking and fringe. This trend is exceptionally versatile and looks great with all of the styles on this list– a word of advice, if you want to wear with skirts look for styles that stop just above or just below the ankle for the most flattering effect on your leg.
I’ve saved my favorite trend for last. I’ve already told you how excited I am when I find chic flats. Now, thanks to the likes of Karl, Raf and others, I can indulge in the comfiest of shoes in style. Streetwear sneakers are on a whole new level this fall with colors, embellishments and unexpected details. This trend is the most natural fit with knitwear and relaxed styles, though don’t underestimate the fashion forward. Both on the runway and red carpet, stylish sneaks and skirts and dresses are making their mark.
